Down Ticket In California

Aside from Barack Obama (and Barbara Lee in Oakland), there are a few more things we have to vote for.

From the State's Labor Federation [with Sheff comments in brackets]
Working Families Voter Guide – November 2008 Ballot Measures

Yes on 1A Safe, Reliable High-Speed Passenger Train Bond Act for the 21st Century. Thousands of union construction & operation jobs. Connects state north to south and stimulates economy.

No position on Prop 2 Improves health & safety for farm animals but also criminalizes workers – not just corporations.
[I just saw an ad that makes me think I should vote YES on this because of cruelty to animals and whatnot. I can respect a NO on this.]

No position on Prop 3 Builds needed new children's hospitals but does not improve worker or patient standards.

No on 4 Teen Safety. Voters have rejected this twice already. New provisions still endanger young women from troubled families, but also hold medical personnel legally liable for family communication.

Yes on 5 Provides nonviolent offenders with drug treatment and rehabilitation. Saves taxpayers $2.5 billion.

No on 6 Takes money from schools, childcare, hospitals to fund failed youth imprisonment policies, racial profiling, and discrimination against immigrants. Worsens state budget crisis. Opposed by teachers, firefighters, faith organizations and your union.

No on 7 Energy Scam. Uncontrollable cost increases for consumers and no solutions to real energy crisis. Written by out-of-state millionaire. Opposed by labor, environmentalists, consumers.

No on 8 Overturns anti-discrimination law and puts denial of marriage rights into the CA Constitution [My brother John says he'll support a ban on gay marriage as soon as the rest of Leviticus gets legislated.]

No on 9 Duplicates existing state laws protecting crime victims, but writes changes into state Constitution and requires ¾ vote to amend in the future. Additional tax burden. Opposed by San Quentin warden.

No on 10 Energy Scam. Will T. Boone Pickens get what he paid for? He is spending millions for an "alternative energy" package that – surprise! – benefits his companies to the exclusion of public and non-profit initiatives. Opposed by labor, environmentalists, consumers.

No on 11 Redistricting. Republican power grab.

Yes on 12 Veterans Bond Act. Support low-interest home loans for veterans

2 and 3 I'm very conflicted on.

I'll be really happy if 1A passes!

I am also conflicted on 2 and 3 as well. I have heard and read convincing arguments for both.

Who said voting was easy!!!
